So you’d like to start a skincare routine, but you’re not sure where to begin: How many skincare products will you need? Which are the best for your skin type? What is the best order to apply these products? And what exactly do the items do?

Knowing what sort of skin you have is the first step in creating the correct routine. Then you’ll know what to do with it.

How to Test your skin type at home?

  1. Wash your face, pat dry. Wait for 30 minutes.
  2. Take a tissue and gently press against different parts of your face: forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.
  3. Examine the transparency of the paper by holding it up to the light.

It’s difficult to figure out the proper skincare routine and order of application when you barely understand the difference between a toner and a serum. It doesn’t help that the internet is filled with misinformation and seriously bad advice. And, as much as I wish I could tell you that your skincare order is unimportant… It is, very much.

But don’t be alarmed—I spend my days reciting skincare product instructions like they’re the Ten Commandments, and now I’m going to share my holy wisdom with you. I’ve broken down the proper order to apply your skincare products, for your specific skin type, below. Also, after all of this, we’d better be best friends, because wow. Let’s get started.

Choose a cleanser that does not dry out your skin after washing. If you have dry skin and don’t wear makeup, clean your face no more than twice a day. For oily and combination skin wash your face twice a day, regularly. Washing for that squeaky-clean feeling is bad because it removes your skin’s natural oils. For oily skin use a gel based cleanser. For dry skin use a cream based cleanser. Use water based cleansers for combination skin. Click on the images to shop the product.

You don’t need a toner, but swiping one on can be a great way to refresh skin. They’re essentially just priming your face for ingredients to be more easily absorbed later on.

You can opt for a hydrating toner, which helps replenish the water your skin barrier lost when you washed and dried your face. It also tightens your pores. The toners provided below can be used for all skin types.

Serums are highly concentrated, nutrient-dense treatments that target specific issues, so keep them as close to the skin as possible. Morning is a great time to use a serum with antioxidants—like a brightening vitamin C serum—because they protect your skin from free radicals you’ll encounter throughout the day. Although serums are completely optional, they are frequently a good first step in levelling up your skincare routine and boosting your skin’s health. These serums provided below can be used for all skin types.

It’s vital to apply eye cream twice a day—starting in our 20s. A good eye cream can brighten, smooth, and firm up the area, but it won’t completely eliminate issues. To avoid tugging on delicate skin and causing damage, lightly tap on a formula targeted to your eye-area concerns with your ring finger (your weakest).

It’s all about keeping the eyelid skin healthy and thick. Improving skin quality in this area early on ensures that the eyelid skin does not lose laxity and smoothness later on.

To reduce puffiness in the morning, use an eye cream with a Jade face roller. For best results, keep the face roller in the fridge 15 minutes before use. These eye creams provided below can be used for all skin types.

You need to use a moisturiser twice a day. Come what may. I can’t stress this enough. Most experts recommend applying a moisturiser while the skin is still damp, so the sooner you finish applying your serum and treatment, the sooner you can lock in much-needed hydration with your moisturiser.
Even oily skin requires moisturiser, but choose one that is lightweight, gel-based, and non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog your pores. Dry skin may benefit from more cream-based moisturisers. For oily skin, use a gel based moisturiser, it’s basically a water based option that’s lightweight and absorbs quickly. For dry skin, use a cream based moisturiser that is more oil based and it’s heavier than lotion. For combination skin, use a lotion based moisturiser.

It’s the most crucial step in any skincare routine, regardless of the skin type and age. Skin cancer and signs of aging can be avoided by protecting your skin from UV rays. Even if your moisturiser has SPF, you should still wear sunscreen. To get the most out of chemical sunscreens, wait 20 minutes before going outside. Reapply after every 2 hours. Look for at least 30 SPF sunscreen. It will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.

For the majority, a good rule of thumb is applying products from the thinnest to the thickest consistency. The most important thing is to develop and stick to a skincare routine that works for you. Have fun experimenting, whether it’s the whole shebang or a simplified ritual.
