Macrame is a textile-making technique that employs knots to create a variety of textiles. Since this art form has regained popularity in recent years, crafters and artists have devised new ways to use macrame that go beyond the traditional plant hangers and wall hangings.
Macrame is everywhere! The combination of Boho and Minimalism creates a warm but chic look. How did this much-maligned 1970s relic find new life in the twenty-first century?
The thing about anything resembling 1970s decor is that it was not a particularly prosperous period for Design. Avocado green was used throughout the rooms, from the carpet to the walls to the bedding, with splashes of harvest gold completing the look. Yuck!
While those colours can stay in the 1970s, Macrame is making a comeback, adding comforting texture to white walls and contrasting beautifully with lush green plants.

What makes something Macrame
Macrame is a textile technique or method that uses several knots to form the basic shape and function of the piece. Each knot is made entirely with your hands, except a mounting ring to keep the item in place while you work.
For something to be considered macrame, it must include at least one macrame knot. Most macrame projects are held together with a series of knots. In some cases, macrame elements can be combined with other techniques such as weaving or knitting.
Common Macrame Supplies
- Jute
- Yarn
- Mounting rings
- Wooden beads
Before purchasing an entire stock of macrame supplies, try to use items you already have for your first project. Before you invest a lot of money in this hobby, make sure you enjoy it. Choose one thread type and one mounting ring. Look around your house for a piece of wood that can serve as a work surface. You can purchase macrame pins to attach your thread to the board. To save money, you can use safety pins for your first project.
Types of Knots
There are dozens of macrame knots to learn, and they can be simple or complex. The half knot and square knot are the most common knots. We recommend that you start with one of these knots and become very comfortable with it before moving on to another.
