“Owning a dog is not just a privilege-it’s a responsibility.”- American Kennel Club
Whether you own a dog, or a cat one thing is for sure, owning that pet comes with a great responsibility. Pets are not accessories that can be thrown aside and forgotten. Pets are companions that need love, care and devotion. Sharing our lives with our pets is incredibly unique and special; dogs for example, make us laugh, keep us company, and share adventures with us. We owe it to our pets to keep them healthy and happy, making sure we’re always there for them, in the right way.
If you are planning to adopt a pet or you have one, all that matters is, are they healthy? Are they happy?
There are many things that we don’t understand about pets, fret not, we are here to give you 10 responsible pet tips:
1. Think twice before getting a pet and their requirements
What pet would suit you according to your budget? Making the wrong choice could mean that you and your pet both end up unhappy so it’s important to think about their needs and how they match up with yours. If you’re at work all day then is it really a good decision to get a dog? Because as we all know dogs need attention the most, if you are unable to give the attention required it would be a total disaster.
2.Move that cute butts:
All pets need regular exercise to stay fit and to release their energy. Without it, your pet will begin to act out. Young pets that do not get enough exercise are more likely to develop negative behavioural issues that lead many to give up their pet, also just like us humans they also get obese which leads in detoriating health of your pet.
3. Provide suitable housing and bedding.
Whether it’s a dog or a rabbit, a gecko or a goldfish, they all have their own environmental needs. If you want to get an exotic pet, make sure you do your research and speak to an expert so your new pet gets everything they need. There are a huge range of pet toys on the market to help you with this, but you could also get creative and make your own!
4. Clean up and deworm your pet regularly.
Parasites like lungworm can make your pet very unwell so we always advise regular deworming, as well as regular flea treatment. Remember, getting rid of them is a lot more difficult than preventing them! Monthly deworm would be a better suggestion if your pet goes hunting whenever they go out, else if your pet is a lazy kid 3 months gap is fine!
Vaccination is a very simple and highly effective way of preventing your pet from contracting some serious deadly diseases like the parvo virus. In fact, some of these diseases have no cure, so vaccination can be the only means of protecting your pet. Vaccination could be the most important thing you do for your pets. So, when you adopt a pet or get a new one there is a thing called series of vaccination for dogs especially; it is better to talk to a vet about vaccinating your pet.
6.Socialise your pet:
Socialising is not only for human kind, it works the same with pets. We feel energetic whenever we socialise except for introverts(Haha!). Meeting new people and other pets improves the confidence of your pet. Plus, having extra playmates will help having a friendly-behaviour. Take them to dog parks or make your cats meet the neighbourhood.
7. Feed them a diet:
It is always better to consult your vet what type of food and how much quantity is right for your pet. Keeping your pet on a regular, portion controlled diet will help with weight management and prevent weight related health problems.
8. Train your pet to understand :
Basic obedience for any pet is required. Dogs should at least understand basic directions like “sit”, “stay” and “run”. In an emergency situation these basic commands can help your pet’s safety.
9. Love and care:
You are your pet’s favourite in the whole world. They crave your love, attention and care. So show them the love and devotion they show you! Regular visits to the vet and groomer are absolutely necessary. Insuring your pet may also be important to your pet’s health. Emergencies can happen at any time. Ensure your pet gets help with pet insurance.
