We are all in for a lifestyle that focuses on health and wellness. But when it comes to picking ourselves up from bed in the morning or getting the drive to work out after a tough day at work, it is not a walk in the park. Therefore, if we find it difficult to bring ourselves to the gym, why don’t we bring the gym to our house? Okay, stop gasping and think about it. No more expensive gym memberships, no waiting in line to use gym equipment and you can workout at your own pace without any judgemental looks glaring around.
Chop, chop, guys, let’s hustle and bustle from our house, and here are a few steps on how to set up your home gym.
Step 1: Figure out your goal
While some work out for general fitness, some focus on strength, training, and muscle building. Therefore, the first and foremost step in setting up a home gym is to discover your aim for the workout. Pertaining to your goals, scheme an idea on how to go about your workout space. If cardio’s your go-to workout routine, invest in cardio gear and set your space accordingly. Your style of workout will determine the entire set-up of the gym, so it is crucial to figure out what your wants and needs are.
Step 2: Set your space
Your gym space does not have to be extravagant with an outspread floor area, fancy lights, and volume systems. All you need is a well-ventilated room with natural light seeping through. Set a budget and customise your space according to personal needs and your manner of workout. Invest in multipurpose fitness gear to get the most out of your workout.
Step 3: Be picky with your equipment choice.
To pump up your workout session, you will need the right set of fitness apparatus. And to get your gym set-up spot on, as mentioned above, it relies on your fitness objective. Hence, it is necessary to do your research and figure out what kind of equipment suits your type of workout and stock them all accordingly. For example, a strength training session will require dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells, and a weight bench, among other things.
Step 4: Design your gym setup
Your sweat-space is where you will be working on your fitness goals, so you might as well customise it according to your liking and convenience. To give you an idea, installing rubber sheets as a flooring option would be a great start as it is highly durable and resilient (also, you wouldn’t need a separate exercise mat). Affixing a floor-length mirror to one side of the wall comes in handy if you want to monitor your posture and form of workout. Other add-ons could be a TV or a monitor to follow online workout routines, a set of speakers to boost your energy, air fresheners to ward off smelly sweat etc. But most importantly, keep an eye out for the budget!
Step 5: Time to pull it off!
Now that everything’s done and dusted, embark on your fitness journey. No more lame excuses: the gym is too far, I feel self-conscious in front of others, I don’t have time, the membership is expensive, blah blah blah (be stronger than your excuses). Once you set up your home gym, be your own fitness cop and make sure you hustle for that muscle and sweat it out. Be consistent with your routine and keep pushing yourself for the perfect gym selfie(tee-hee).
